Google Sending Warnings To Business Owners: 3 Weeks To Save Their Google Places Listing…

Business owners have reported on the Google Business Help forums that they are getting emails from Google with the subject line: “Action Required: You have 3 weeks to save your Google Places Listing.”

The body of the email reads as follows:

Hello,
Due to changes in Google Maps, we’d like to inform you that unless you review and confirm the information in your Google Places account, we will no longer be able to keep and show it to Google users after February 21, 2014.

If you wish to keep your listing active, follow these three easy steps:

1. Log in to your Google Places account
2. Review and update your information
3. Click the “Submit” button

Sincerely,
The Google Places Team

Jade Wang, Google Business Community Manager, has confirmed that this IS a legitimate email Google is sending out saying Google is making some changes to Google Places for Business and Google Maps. Part of these changes involve asking business owners to review and confirm some of the information in their Google Places accounts. Jade also apologizes for any inconvenience this causes.

If you have a Google Places listing but did not receive this email, it doesn’t necessarily mean you weren’t affected. The email may have been automatically trashed by your spam filter of your inbox, so you may want to manually check to make sure so you can avoid your Places listing becoming de-listed.

In order to manually check, just log into Google Places for Business and take a look at your business information.

Use Google+ to increase your SEO ranking.

With so many changes in the Google search algorithm, it’s important to keep up with what matters – and right now, Google+ matters! Taking the time to optimise your page and profile, share interesting content and track your efforts puts your website on the path to higher SEO rankings.

So, you want to increase your search rankings, and using your Google+ page and profile WILL help. Google+ can help you increase search rankings for your website, just by taking the time to optimise your page, profile, and of course, content.

Todays post shows you 3 ways to maximise your Google+ presence!

No.1: Optimise Your Google+ Details

The SEO title is the name of your Google+ business page. Use your company name and avoid using keywords in the SEO title – it’s unprofessional and has no real SEO value.

  • Custom Page URL

You can also customise your Google+ URL. This is great news for companies that want to include cleaner links in their marketing. Your new customised URL looks like this: https://plus.google.com/+YourCompanyName.

To set your custom Google+ page or profile URL:

  • Go to your page or profile and click About.
  • Scroll down to the Links box. You’ll see your existing Google+ page URL.
  • Click on the link and Google+ asks you if you want to convert to a new custom Google+ page URL.

Below you can see where we’ve customised our URL for our business to Right Click Digital:

  • SEO Meta Description

The SEO meta description for your page combines your tagline and the first two sentences of your introduction. You only get 160 characters – so make them count!

To edit your meta description or tagline, go to your Google+ business page and follow these instructions:

  • Click the Manage This Page button at the top of the page.
  • Click Edit Page on the section with your page name on it.
  • Click Edit in the Story section on the next page.
  • Make your changes and click Save.

Include one or two of your target SEO keywords in your description.

  • Google+ Authorship

Google+ Authorship is becoming an increasingly important ranking factor. Authorship tags each piece of content you create and lets Google know you created it.

Without Google+ Authorship, you’re losing potential link juice and SEO benefits. Eric Schmidt, author of The New Digital Age, says, “Within search results, information tied to verified online profiles will be ranked higher than content without such verification…”

There are two ways to set up Google+ Authorship to “claim” your own content:

  • If you have an email address that matches your domain (i.e. info@rightclicksdigital.co.uk), you can go to the Google+ Authorship page and simply enter your email address to complete the process.
  • If you don’t have an email address that matches your domain, then you’ll have to include a Google+ link to your profile in the author bio of any site you write for. To do that, you’ll use Google

No.2: Posting Content To Share

Once everything is set up; you’ve optimised your Google+ page and profile, and correctly set up Google+ Authorship, you’re ready to start posting content. This is the quickest and easiest way to build a solid following on Google+ because at the end of the day, good content is what it is all about!

When posting content to your Google+ profile or page, follow these guidelines:

  • Share a summary of the content you’re linking to. Don’t go overboard; short and simple are fine.
  • Don’t include the link in the Summary box. Instead, put the link in the Link Attachment area so you’ll get the SEO benefit of a DoFollow link.
  • Share the content with any of your existing circles.
  • You can also check the box that allows you to email your Google+ update to your circles – if you think this is something a specific your audience would like.

No.3: Connecting It All Together

Now it’s time to see how it all works together. You can track every piece of Google+ content you distribute or just a select few.

Tracking the content you share on Google+ allows you to correlate SEO gains and ranking increases against Google +1s and other social signals. An easy way to keep an eye on what’s working and what’s not is to assign each Google+ link a custom URL, then review its stats weekly in Google Analytics.

To set up a custom URL, open Google URL Builder in a new tab and complete the information. Here’s an overview of each section and what you should type in:

  • Website URL: Enter the URL of the content you want to share and measure.
  • Campaign Source: This is the platform you’re using to distribute the content—in this case, Google+.
  • Campaign Medium: The medium is how you’re sharing your content. This could be a tweet, Facebook status or LinkedIn update. In this instance, the campaign medium is Google+ Post.
  • Campaign Term: You can skip this one for now. It’s not used for this campaign.
  • Campaign Content: Type in the title of what you’re sharing; for example, “How to measure social media traffic.”
  • Campaign Name: Use something simple you can easily recognize later when you’re sifting through Google Analytics; for example, “January’s Google+ campaign.”

When you’ve completed the URL Builder form, click Submit and you’ll get your appended URL. If you like, you can use a URL shortener like bit.ly to make it look cleaner.

Following on from yesterdays’ post, here are some tips to use right away in your own business…

Put Your Current Customers On A Monthly Retainer!

Instead of taking a one off payment for your services, can you change your payment options to include a set fee monthly?

You set up an agreement with your Customer and arrange for an automatic monthly payment into your account. You agree to do a set amount of work each month and your Customer agrees to pay you a certain amount each month.

This is a great way to ensure a consistent cash flow and would also help with sales if your services are a high end ticket price. Using a monthly payment method helps both you and your Customer.

Over Deliver EVERY Time!

Always provide more than you promised. It’s those extra little goodies or perks that you get when you don’t expect them which builds trust and long term business relationships.

Be Easy To Work With!

You might consider this a “no-brainer,” but many Customers have horror stories about their suppliers. Be easy to work with and reliable, and Customers will want to work with you again – and refer you to others.

Remember, each of your Customers have their OWN business to run. If they can count on you to do what you say you’ll do – in the time you said you’d do it – and they’ll be more willing to work with you again. And, after you deliver consistently for a while, they’ll be more unlikely to look anywhere else.

Follow Up, Follow Up (And Then Follow Up Again)!

With everything involved in obtaining a new Customer – marketing, lead capture, follow up, proposals, agreements, and more – why would you want to do just one project and consider it done? I wouldn’t. Yet, many companies do this all the time. Usually the thinking is “If they like my work enough, they’ll call me for more.”

But, your Customers are busy and probably don’t have time to follow up with you – so you need to keep in touch with them.

I’m sure you don’t need to be told that it costs 6-7 times more money to land a new Customer than to retain an existing one.

Digital Marketing, Website Design BarnstapleThe probability of selling to an existing Customer is 60-70 percent whereas the probability of selling to a new prospect is only 5-20 percent!

It’s a great example of the The Pareto Principle in action. Repeat Customers – often 20 percent of your Client base – will account for 80 percent of your profits. (That’s been true with almost all of our online businesses.)

So, what are the benefits to working with repeat Customers?

You And Your Customer Know What To Do!

When working with each other again, you and your Customer know what to do and what to expect. Your repeat Customer also knows your standard of work and your support or service – so they already know, like, and trust you.

This makes repeat purchases, quotations, agreements, etc much easier.

You Don’t Have To Resell Your Business To Repeat Customers!

Getting new prospects can be hard work for most businesses. In fact so much that a lot of one man businesses struggle so much with it that they experience the feast or famine cycle over and over again.

But, once you sell your business to a Customer once, the hard work is done – as long as you do a great job, your Customer is likely to use you again.

You’re More Likely To Get Paid Quicker!

When you work with the same Customers repeatedly, you both get used to the pay cycle. No more stress about when (or if) you’ll get paid!. It goes without saying that if your Customer didn’t pay on time, would you really want them as a repeat Customer?

You Don’t Have To Prove Yourself!

Often when working with new Customers you have to prove yourself before they see you as the expert. This means that they could have a tendency to get too involved or take advantage of your knowledge with hundreds of questions. However, repeat Customers will now regard you as the expert that gets your work done. Good repeat Customers know that you’re capable of doing the job, and doing it within the agreed time and budget.

So, why isn’t your diary full of repeat Customers? Maybe you don’t know how to turn them from one-time Customers to loyal, repeat buyers.

If that is the case, look out for some tips in our next post!
