Most people know what social media is, and even belong to many social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube, to name just a few. But how can you use these sites to help your business? What exactly is social media marketing?
The term social media marketing, also known as SMM, can sometimes be misleading and confusing because it contains the word “marketing” in it, which generally means actively and aggressively advertising your small business. While you should be both active and aggressive in your SMM campaigns, the focus is NOT directly on selling your product or your service.
This guide will help point the way so that your company can make the most of their Social Media footprint.

We received a copy of the latest Thomson Local today at our offices and as you can see from the image, this is now a very small book indeed – A5 size and very thin!
You may have missed that they went into administration in August 2013 but were rescued – with a loss of hundreds of jobs.
Over the past few years we’ve watched traditional advertising mediums drop as more and more people used Digital Marketing for their business. The Yellow Pages has also shrunk too – and in our area it now covers a huge geographical area but gets thinner every year.
There are some interesting stats as to why traditional print is not working as an advertising medium…
• Just over half the respondents believed online business directories were more up-to-date and accurate than the Yellow Pages.
• A third of those under the age of 29 never use Yellow Pages.
When looking for local businesses most people now just search via their smartphone, so it’s essential to be top of the search engines and have a great looking mobile landing page so that people can first of all find you, then when they hit your site they can navigate around easily.
Did you know that 14% of households recycle these paper directories as soon as they arrive!
According to the Local Government Association, unwanted phone books create 75,000 tons of waste paper a year. Disposing of them costs taxpayers £7.5million a year in England alone!
We think (and maybe we’re biased – but we have used both methods over the years, so we have experience in not getting a great ROI with print advertising!) that most brick and mortar businesses that would traditionally have used print advertising would have better results by being online – as that’s where everyone is looking – they’re Googling it!

Are You Using Rich Snippets On Your Website?
If you use rich snippets on your websites, you should be aware that Google has started to penalise websites for incorrect data markup.
What Is A Rich Snippet?
Rich snippets are enhanced displays of web page results such as images and extra information
about the website. A common example would be when you see a listing in the SERPS (Search Engine Ranking) that shows star ratings next to it.

What Is Actually Being Targeted?
This penalty targets websites that are using incorrect markup such as including authorship on homepages and reviews on pages where there are no reviews.
How Do You Know If You Have Been Effected?
This is a manual penalty and if you have been effected by it then you will have a message inside of your Google Webmasters account.
Final Words
Rich snippets are great as they help your listings stand out and will always have a positive effect
on the CTR (Click Through Rate). But due to the massive abuse Google has had no choice but to issue penalties for incorrect usage.
If you do use rich snippets then just be sure to accurately represent the content of your page.
Want To Know More About Rich Snippets?
Here’s a great article from Link-Assistant which contains more info about the penalty and more detail about rich snippets.

Following on from yesterdays’ post, here are some tips to use right away in your own business…
Put Your Current Customers On A Monthly Retainer!
Instead of taking a one off payment for your services, can you change your payment options to include a set fee monthly?
You set up an agreement with your Customer and arrange for an automatic monthly payment into your account. You agree to do a set amount of work each month and your Customer agrees to pay you a certain amount each month.
This is a great way to ensure a consistent cash flow and would also help with sales if your services are a high end ticket price. Using a monthly payment method helps both you and your Customer.
Over Deliver EVERY Time!
Always provide more than you promised. It’s those extra little goodies or perks that you get when you don’t expect them which builds trust and long term business relationships.
Be Easy To Work With!
You might consider this a “no-brainer,” but many Customers have horror stories about their suppliers. Be easy to work with and reliable, and Customers will want to work with you again – and refer you to others.
Remember, each of your Customers have their OWN business to run. If they can count on you to do what you say you’ll do – in the time you said you’d do it – and they’ll be more willing to work with you again. And, after you deliver consistently for a while, they’ll be more unlikely to look anywhere else.
Follow Up, Follow Up (And Then Follow Up Again)!
With everything involved in obtaining a new Customer – marketing, lead capture, follow up, proposals, agreements, and more – why would you want to do just one project and consider it done? I wouldn’t. Yet, many companies do this all the time. Usually the thinking is “If they like my work enough, they’ll call me for more.”
But, your Customers are busy and probably don’t have time to follow up with you – so you need to keep in touch with them.
