Colour psychology and how it relates to your business is a genuinely controversial aspect of marketing. There are a great many misconceptions around colours and persuasion. A lot of the “science” is simply anecdotal, hunches or conversations.

The issue with colour and how it affects us is down to many aspects; elements such as personal preference, experiences, upbringing, cultural differences, or context, often muddy the effect individual colours have on us. So the notion that colors such as yellow or purple are able to evoke some sort of hyper-specific emotion or response is about as accurate as reading Tarot cards!

In the area of branding and marketing, there have been numerous attempts to classify consumer responses to different individual colours, but the truth of the matter is that colour really is far too dependent on an individuals personal experience and can’t be universally translated to specific feelings or reactions.

That being said, there are broader messaging patterns to be found in colour perceptions and colour DOES play a fairly substantial role in purchases and branding.

In an appropriately titled study called Impact of Color in Marketing, researchers found that up to 90% of snap judgments made about products can be based on colour alone (depending on the product).

With regards to the role that colour plays in branding, results from studies such as The Interactive Effects of Colors show that the relationship between brands and colour hinges on the perceived appropriateness of the colour being used for that brand.

The merits to choosing one colour for your company logo or branding over another are easy to see. But without context, choosing one colour over another doesn’t make much sense. In other words, does the colour “fit” what is being sold.

There is very little evidence to support that orange will universally make people purchase a product more often than silver. Certain colours do broadly align with specific traits (e.g., brown with ruggedness, purple with sophistication, and red with excitement). But nearly every academic study on colours and branding will tell you that it’s far more important for your brand’s colours to support the personality you want to portray instead of trying to align with stereotypical colour associations.

It’s the feeling, mood, and image that your brand creates that play a role in persuasion. Be sure to recognise that colours only come into play when they can be used to match a brand’s desired personality.

There is no easy, clear-cut set of guidelines for choosing your brand’s colours, but it is worth considering do the colours match your product or service and reflect the “feeling” you want to convey.

Just by having that conversation and making those colour considerations, you’ll be doing what very few SME’s do!

digitalmarketingdevon_brandingWe’re currently going through some major changes here at Right Click and we’ve been thinking about our image and branding. In the Digital Marketing arena there are so many things to consider; online reputation, website, social media et all! How it looks, how it links together and how our Clients see us.

Branding is not just for the big boys! It’s really important for small businesses and local bricks and mortar businesses too.

If you want to run a successful business, then you just cannot ignore branding. Branding not only makes you look more professional by having a cohesive image, but that image will make your business easily recognisable.digitalmarketingcompanydevon_brandingcartoon

When thinking about branding, it’s important to think about the size of your business. Chances are, you’re not some Fortune 500 company who needs a 80 page branding book to describe your ethos; you’re a small business that needs strong and efficient branding guidelines that can help you achieve your “mission”.

So, how do you even begin to come up with those guidelines? Have a look at this article we found which gives you some pointers and look out for our new website coming soon!

DigitalMarketingConsultantcyExeterDevonDid you know that your business is judged by online reviews?

Your potential Customers are influenced by online reviews when choosing who to buy from. If poor reviews are the only thing that potential Customers see, then they will go to your competitor.

So it is essential that you keep an eye on your online reputation and actively work to ensure that any poor reviews are pushed down onto the second or third page or search engine results. Of course if the reviews are genuine it goes without saying that you need to address the issues within your organisation too.

The problem with search engines is that they decide which version of the truth people see! Most people “Google it” for information and never really look past the first page of search results as 91% of people do not go beyond page 1!

So it’s imperative that your business has plenty of online reviews from happy and satisfied customers and that you engage with bad comments to solve issues whether on review sites or on social media.

It takes a lot of work to push those bad reviews out of the way. You can start by claiming your company’s real estate. That means Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Yelp, a domain, and a blog. Flood the internet with new “news”. Even start a Tumblr and Pinterest account and register with lots of social networks – even the obscure ones.

Update everything regularly and the new “news” pushes down all the older content, helping move it to the dark, dingy page two or even the barren landscape of page three!

The average company doesn’t have things that need hiding, but need to be reactive to Customer issues. So to keep looking good online it would take about 10 – 20 hours or so a month on a continuous basis to keep ahead of the competition.

Doing creative work for free, doesn’t work for most businesses. Architects don’t give away their blueprints. Restaurants don’t give away free meals hoping they’ll become your Restaurant of Choice for the next 12 months. Personal Trainers don’t sign over their intellectual property to you when you go to the gym.

How many musicians get told “come and play here for free and you’ll get some great exposure”. Replace the word “musicians” with photographers, copywriters, artists, poets, etc, etc, etc!

This great video pokes fun at the speculative creative bidding process which is endemic in the creative field.

Your Local Digital Marketing Company in Barnstaple, Devon:

If you’ve already set up your Google+ account you’ll realise that you had to use your real name. Didn’t want to use your real name – tough! How tough? Even Eric Schmidt reportedly suggested that you should “find another social network“.

Google announced the change on their Google+ page, and apologised that it took so long for them to make this decision.

Quote:

We know you’ve been calling for this change for a while. We know that our names policy has been unclear, and this has led to some unnecessarily difficult experiences for some of our users. For this we apologize, and we hope that today’s change is a step toward making Google+ the welcoming and inclusive place that we want it to be.
