Social media marketing is becoming more popular by the day. Many people who think the job of social media manager is easy are misinformed. They believe that anyone can sit around and play on social media sites for multiple hours each and every day of their life. However, that is NOT what a social media manager does. Before you commit, take a look at yourself and consider the factors that may make you change your mind about becoming a Social Media Manager.

Here are some tell-tale signs that will help you prove to yourself that you probably should not become a social media manager:

1. You don’t have the time to commit to working a strategized, organized and successful social media campaign. This includes development and implementation as well as follow through and constant monitoring.

2. You have no experience in marketing of any type. Although you may spend 24 hours a day / 7 days a week on social media sites, this does NOT qualify you to become a social media manager. You may chat all day and most of the night with friend, but that isn’t a good sign. Social media managers do a lot more than general chit-chat on social media sites.

3. No passion. Plain and simple, if you have no passion about what you are doing, you will not succeed.

4. No written or conversational skills. If you lack in that area, then it’s a real good sign that social media management is not what you should do. You must have good writing skills and be able to interact with others in the community in a conversational tone.

5. No knowledge about confidentiality or security. If you have no idea about client confidentiality or security, then you definitely need to consider a different line of work. Social media managers must respect client confidentiality and maintain a secure work environment in an effort to protect the privacy of their clients.

6. If you are not a patient person and don’t have the ability or time to be patient, friendly and responsive, then you would not make a good social media manager. Social media managers need to be kind, friendly, patient and responsive at all times.

7. Tunnel vision is another unwanted attribute. If you can’t “think outside the box” and only know one way of doing things, then you would not make a good social media manager. The job requires vision and creativity.

8. If you are loner, chances are, you wouldn’t even like being a social media manager. Social media is about being “social.”

9. No concept of urgency? If that applies to you, then you definitely need to seek another career.

10. Last but not least, if you have formed a personal relationship with one social media site over another and just can’t seem to adapt to multiple platforms and multi-task, then social media management is out of the question for you.

Being in love with Facebook doesn’t mean you can be a social media manager. Before making a final decision, do your research and decide if you are willing to commit the necessary time, effort, training and experience required to be a good social media manager.
